Shortly after the debut of the first trailer for the upcoming GTA game, Grand Theft Auto 6, Take2-Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, revealed its availability on console devices by 2025, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
However, the announcement didn’t address anything about a Windows release, which raised uncertainties among PC gamers.
So, what’s the truth behind this story? Will GTA 6 be released on PC?

Will GTA 6 Be Released On PC?
Many fans are disappointed after seeing the official announcement from Take2 Interactive, confirming that GTA 6 is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2025.
While it’s understandable that PlayStation 4 won’t support the advanced technology required for GTA 6, the absence of any mention of a Windows PC release is puzzling.
PCs can be regularly upgraded and are typically capable of handling GTA 6’s demands. However, considering Rockstar’s previous patterns, there might be hints about this decision.
Looking at the history of GTA 5, things were a bit of a wait for fans. The first trailer dropped on November 2, 2011, but the announcement about its release came almost a year later, on October 30, 2012, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
It took another year, until November 18, 2014, for the game to hit consoles like PS4 and Xbox One. PC gamers had to wait the longest, as the game landed on Windows on April 14, 2015.
So it’s clear that Rockstar has a plan for the Windows platform, but it usually comes after the console releases.
Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar path. It hit the shelves on October 26, 2018, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But for PC players, it was a longer wait—November 5, 2019, was the day they finally got to play it on Windows.
As GTA 6 is the next big project set for release in 2025, it’s likely that the next game of the Grand Theft Auto franchise will follow that pattern.
In other words, it’s likely that GTA 6 will be released on Windows, but the exact day is yet to be known, and it could be 1 to 2 years later than on console devices.
Why Does Rockstar Delay PC Releases Compared to Consoles?
As of now, since there isn’t too much official information related to GTA 6, we have no idea why Rockstar delays it on the Windows platform.
However, based on what Rockstar has shown in the past, it could be due to two main reasons:
- Technical issue
- Sales
When it comes to technical aspects, it’s clear that although games from Rockstar often arrive later on PCs, they benefit from optimization, providing better graphics and performance.
For instance, GTA V on PCs supports up to 4k resolution and a 60fps frame rate, whereas the version on PS4 only reaches 1080p and 30fps. The difference is even more noticeable on PS3, with 720p resolution and 30fps.
Consequently, playing GTA 5 on PCs allows you to maximize graphics and performance, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

We also had a post predicting that GTA 6 might be released later on PC, based on information from Tez2 on GTAforums.
Going back to the delay of GTA 5 on PC, Rockstar explained that the PC version required more time and effort to develop and improve compared to the console version, indicating a similar situation for GTA 6.
Things happened similarly with Red Dead Redemption 2. According to some sources, the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 features visual enhancements, offering 4K resolution and HDR support. Not to mention that the Windows version offers better FPS than console devices.
Additionally, the reason behind Rockstar’s decision to delay the release of GTA 6 on PC might be linked to sales and profit strategies.
According to Forbes, GTA 5 sold around 11.2 million copies within 24 hours of its release and reached $1 billion in sales within 3 days. In contrast, the number of copies sold on PC within the first month was just 2 million.
Typically, console game sales surpass those on PC, which might explain Rockstar’s decision to delay the release of GTA 6 on PC.
This delay allows them to maximize profits and dedicate more time to optimizing the PC version.
Moreover, an early release of GTA 6 on PC could encounter issues such as cracks, hacks, and numerous bugs. This could potentially decrease the credibility of GTA 6 and Rockstar’s reputation as a whole.
